Modum municipality is located in the county of Buskerud in eastern Norway. Modum is 80 kilometers from the capital, Oslo, and 40 kilometers from the city of Drammen.
There are approximately 14,700 residents in Modum municipality. The municipality covers an area of 517 km², of which 54 km² is water. Three rivers flow through our village, which is reflected in the municipal coat of arms.
The municipal center is in Vikersund, with about 4,000 inhabitants. Åmot, also with around 4,000 residents, is the school center.
The residents of Modum make a living primarily in health-related industries, trade, some industry, as well as agriculture and forestry. There are also large power plants based on waterfalls and hydropower in our municipality, which are an important source of income.
Modum municipality is the largest employer with up to 2,000 employees, distributed across approximately 1,250 full-time equivalents.
There is a lot of beautiful nature in Modum. We have forested hills, a beautiful fjord, and great areas for recreation and outdoor life. Many enjoy skiing in the winter, as well as walking on trails and roads in beautiful landscapes during the summer months.
We also have a beautiful lake, Tyrifjorden, which is used for swimming, boating, and recreation in the summer.
The municipality's tourist attractions are primarily Vikersundbakken; the world's largest ski flying hill – with a hill record of 253.5 meters. We also hold the women's world record at 236 meters.
In Modum, you can also find Blaafarveværket, one of the country's ten most visited tourist attractions – a cultural and industrial park with old mines, exhibitions, and family activities.
Blaafarveværket is known for its history of extracting cobalt blue pigment from large mountain areas. Modum is known for major events, such as the annual ski jumping competitions at Vikersundbakken broadcast to the whole world, as well as other large cultural and sports events.
The residents are known for their great volunteer efforts, solidarity, and pride in the village. One of the world's greatest athletes of all time, the biathlete Ole Einar Bjørndalen, who has won 8 olympic gold medals among other achievements, was born and raised in Modum. A statue of him has been erected in his hometown, Simostranda.
Modum has a political structure with a municipal council and executive committee, where Mayor Sunni G. Aamodt leads the work. Nikolay Edin Larsen is the deputy mayor. The municipal council has 35 representatives.
